The CDC has issued an updated recommendation regarding eye protection for healthcare workers.  We were graciously given 96 face shields from the Shelby County Healthcare Coalition.  We will begin distributing them first to all nurses who work with trach/vent patients.  The face shield will be labeled with your first name and should be reused unless it becomes torn.  The shields will be left in a brown Kroger sack at each patient home.  Shields should not go between patient homes.

  • Face shields are NOT a substitute for a mask.  A mask must be worn at all times.
  • Wear a face shield when providing direct patient care.  You do not have the wear a shield if you are at least 6 feet away from your patient.
  • Shields should be cleaned daily with disinfectant wipes, if available or washed with soap and hot water.  Be cautious to keep the foam padding dry when washing.
  • Shields can be stored in the plastic bag it comes in or a brown paper sack.
